Aotearoa Artists at the Lyon Biennale

The 18th Lyon Biennale opens this September with an unprecedented presence from Aotearoa New Zealand. Ten artists — Fiona Clark, Ngahina Hohaia (Taranaki Iwi, Te Atiawa, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Mutunga, Parihaka), Rangi Kipa (Te Āti Awa, Taranaki, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama), Maureen Lander (Ngāpuhi, Te Hikutū), Yana Nafysa Dombrowsky M’Baye, John Miller (Ngāpuhi, Ngāi Tāwake ki te tuawhenua, Te Uri Taniwha, Ngāti Rēhia, Te Whiu), Sriwhana Spong, Michael Stevenson, Ashleigh Taupaki (Ngāti Hako, Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāti Kahungunu) and Luke Willis Thompson — will present work across one of Europe’s leading contemporary art events. Alongside the exhibitions, Rangi Kipa will undertake a ten-day residency at the Biennale, carving tohorā (whale bone) alongside a presentation of more than 20 works created over the past two decades. Visitors will also find a specially assembled collection of books on art and artists from Aotearoa in the Biennale bookshop — many not usually available in Europe.

The Biennale Preview takes place 17-18 September, before opening to the public from 19 September to 13 December. If you’re in Europe this is an exceptional opportunity to encounter contemporary art from Aotearoa on an international stage.
