Atamira Dance Company creates works shaped by the cultural identity of their land to uplift indigenous world views through dance. In their Joyce debut, the company brings Te Wheke, which calls forth The Octopus, a powerful, mythological symbol for Oceanic peoples.
“Reimagining Atamira over the deep plunge into the pandemic, Te Wheke then arrived on a surging wave to commemorate our 21st year milestone of creating and presenting inspirational Māori contemporary dance,” says Atamira’s Artistic Director Jack Gray.
Inspired by a Māori model of hauora (well-being) which frames the choreographic structure of solo and ensemble work, eight dancers and eight choreographic practitioners, tuakana (senior) and teina (emerging), journey into the esoteric and universal dimensions of humanity. Layers of Te Ao Māori emanate through accomplished patterns of video design, mesmeric soundscapes, and subtle shimmering garments with reflective lighting enhancing the darkness and light.
Celebrate the company’s Joyce debut from March 29 through April 2!
Tickets start at US$10. For more information, click here!
